WOAH Fest Announces Of Monsters And Men Sideshow

Yes, it’s a whole new excuse to spend more money, hard-earned or not. WOAH Fest, a newly launched indie festival by local scene mavens, Symmetry Entertainment, in partnership with Philippines’ rising music and arts festival, Wanderland, will be debuting next year on our sunny, music-lapping shores.

The festival is slated to happen in 2016 and promises to bring a broad line up - bands, electronic producers, DJs, and all kinds of hipster fare. Before the actual festival itself, however, the organizers have kindly seen fit to bring in a couple of tasty appetizers to whet our greedy tastebuds, the first being none other than indie-darlings Death Cab for Cutie, set to play here in March, 2016 (we’re extremely ecstatic for that one).

And it gets even better, because next on the drooled-upon list are none other than the bards of Iceland, Of Monsters and Men. Best known for their folky and poppy tunes, including hit songs ‘Little Talks’ and ‘Mountain Sound’, it will be OMAM’s first show in Singapore since Laneway Festival in 2013.

Despite losing one member to become a five-piece, their new material released earlier this year has not scaled down in any sort of musical scope. “Beneath The Skin” retains the band’s signature sound. Apart from their usual references to nature and those wonderful Icelandic fairytales, the songs take on a powerful progression in this new collection, with the band’s writing process reflecting the special dynamic that is shared between immensely close friends, tapping on raw emotions through the exploration of darker elements and interpersonal relationships.

It may seem a lot less whimsical, but there’s no denying the strength of their new material. Nanna Brundís Hilmarsdóttir’s emotive, fragile, yet forceful lead vocals spearhead the tracks, while Ragnar “Raggi” Þórhallsson’s voice blends in as seamlessly as ever. Personal favourites are ‘Empire’ and ‘I Of The Storm’; it’s honestly a challenge to not fall for their poetic, lyrical powers, always leaving room for mystical interpretation.

OMAM will play here on the 10th of May, 2016, at The Coliseum, Hard Rock Hotel in Resorts World Sentosa. If you would like to catch them and listen to their new tracks live, grab tickets via Peatix here.

Here’s the MV to one of our favourite tracks off their new album, ‘Empire’:
