Japanese math rock band Toe released their third album ‘Hear Now’ in July after getting picked up by US-based label Topshelf Records. Longtime fans of the band may be surprised that half the tracks on ‘Hear Now’ have vocals in them, given the previous albums and EPs were all instrumentals. Purists may consider this copping out, but Toe have adapted the vocals to their signature melodic guitar and acute drumming. Stand out vocal track ‘Time Goes’ features Tokyo-born rapper 5lack and makes me think of what Jazz Liberatorz would sound like if they were Japanese. ‘Song Silly’ starts off with a piano instrumental that could have come straight out of a John Legend album, until Jamaican singer-songwriter Olivia Barrell’s soulful vocals kick in.
Toe’s concert at Zouk on 30 November has long sold out, but the good folks at Symmetry have added a second night on 29 November. We have a pair of tickets to give away. Look out for details on our Instagram feed.
